Buddy Dean Lilly, a 61-year-old Lake View Terrace man, was horseback riding around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in the Orcas-Gabrielino Equestrian Center when it is possible that the animal may have gotten spooked and began galloping, according to Los Angeles police Sgt. Rudy Alaniz.
Lilly started slipping sideways off the saddle as the horse ran through a wooded area. His head and upper chest eventually collided with a tree. Lilly died instantly.
The horse continued to run, but was not hurt. Lilly, an experienced horseback rider, was apparently not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Authorities are dubbing this a freak accident, saying that no one knows why the horse reacted in that way.

I knew both the horse and Bud. I really think something happened to him causing him to fall off the side of the horse, spooking him. I think he had a heart attack, stroke or a diabetic attack. There is no way such an experienced horse person would just hang sideways off a galloping horse, just no way.
I have seen a similiar thing with an older rider possibly in her late 70’s or early 80’s but luckily she was not hurt. We were at a horseshow and she just went limp. She slumped over and did not try to control her horse. She luckily slid off her horse, fell to the ground rather quietly, was passed out, and her horse stopped and stood next her wondering what happened. And of course, there was doctor on hand to treat her. I can’t imagine that an experienced horseman would not try to contain a spooked horse and would either do an emergency dismount or possibly be thrown off. So sorry to hear of Buddy’s accident.
